Nike is beginning to become a major player in baseball equipment. This item has three particular features that pleases me every time behind the plate:
1) Lightweight for mobility. Also, to comment more on fit, this chest protector has a very nice adjustable harness. However, it only adjusts to a certain point and will feel slightly longer than expected for small catchers.
2) Horizontal memory foam in the abdomen area. This has been really nice feature to help me block baseballs squarely. I have used some chest protectors with "vertical lines" in the same area and noticed that, on a rare occasion, baseballs will bounce sideways a little bit.
3) Memory foam padding throughout (except for the shoulder pad). The padding retains some of the shape of any object that applied pressure to the pad. In other words, this protector has excellent ball-deadening features. Particularly, I have not felt significant pain in the chest area from blocking fastballs in the mid to upper 80s mph when compared to other products that I have used.
Please note that proper techniques and skills are of primary importance to playing the catcher position well in a safe way. However, this chest protector seems to help play better at a much lower pain level.
